Most “best business class” lists rank the seat an airline shows you in the brochure. That seat is often on a handful of aircraft. CabinScore ranks these 26 airlines on both numbers: the best seat an airline flies, and the typical seat — every cabin weighted by how often CabinScore actually observes it flying the 261 routes it tracks.
The gap between those two numbers is the most useful thing on this page. It is the difference between what an airline sells and what it operates.
The universe: the 26 airlines CabinScore has scored cabins for, ranked among themselves. This is not a survey of every airline flying business class — a carrier CabinScore hasn't covered yet is absent, not last. Typical-seat figures are weighted by the 261 tracked routes, which is a slice of each airline's network, so the route count beside each entry is how much evidence that number rests on.

China Airlines Business Class (ex-SAS A350) · A350-900 · 0.2-point drop to the typical seat
A single, unique China Airlines A350-900 (B-18919, formerly SAS SE-RSA, MSN 358) carries the original Scandinavian Airlines Vantage XL business cabin essentially intact, with only minor rebranding (headrests, IFE skin). Thompson Aero Vantage XL in a 1-2-1 staggered layout provides every passenger direct aisle access and a fully flat bed. There are no closing privacy doors — the staggered geometry and side console do the privacy work — so the suite feels open compared to newer door-equipped products. Even-numbered rows place the window seat against the window for the most privacy and best views; odd-numbered rows shift the window seat toward the aisle.

JAL A350-1000 Business Class is an enclosed private suite product (Safran Seats GB / Safran Unity family) arranged in a staggered 1-2-1 layout across two cabins (54 seats total). Suites feature sliding/translucent doors, very tall suite walls (~132cm), a 24-inch 4K screen, wardrobe, large luggage storage, and a stowable privacy partition between center seats.
The catch: Japan Airlines still flies Japan Airlines JAL SKY SUITE on the 787-8, at 7.9/10 — the same fare, a different generation of seat.
JetBlue’s premium cabin on the A321neo “32Q/3NS” is an all-suite Mint product in a 1-1 herringbone layout, offering fully lie-flat seats with a privacy door and direct aisle access at every seat. The first row features two larger “Mint Studio” suites with additional space, a larger screen, and a guest seat.
The catch: JetBlue still flies JetBlue Mint on the A321-200, at 5.9/10 — the same fare, a different generation of seat.
Lufthansa's new-generation Allegris business class cabin, fitted exclusively on Allegris-equipped A350-900 tails (AeroLOPA subtype lh-35p). The cabin spans two sections across rows 2–12 with approximately 38 lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 direct-aisle-access layout. Seats are manufactured by Collins Aerospace and feature a herringbone-style staggered arrangement with privacy sidewalls reaching at least 114 cm (45 in) high. The cabin offers multiple distinct seat-position variants within a single product: standard Business seats with full lie-flat capability and a 2.0 m bed, extended-bed positions reaching 2.2 m, window 'throne' seats with extra surface area, and front-row Business Suite positions equipped with a sliding privacy door and additional storage. Center pairs in selected rows are designed to convert into a shared double bed for companions. All positions include a 17-inch personal monitor, wireless charging, and Bose noise-cancelling headphones.

Singapore Airlines Business Class · A380-800 · 0.3-point drop to the typical seat
Singapore Airlines' 2017-generation A380 Business Class: an all-forward-facing seat arranged 1-2-1 across the upper deck, with direct aisle access from every seat. Each seat is 25 in (64 cm) wide at the seat and reclines directly into a fully flat bed about 78 in (198 cm) long. Features an 18-inch HD screen, Poltrona Frau leather, and generous side and under-console stowage. There is no enclosed privacy door; center pairs have a retractable divider, and bulkhead rows can form a wide double bed. 78 seats total, spread across a forward cabin plus a mid cabin and a small rear mini-cabin.

Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class on the A330-900neo is a 1-2-1 suite cabin with privacy doors and direct aisle access from every seat. Two extra-spacious “Retreat Suite” seats (1D/1G) at the front convert into a shared social space bookable as a paid upgrade, with “The Loft” lounge area behind the cabin.
The catch: Virgin Atlantic still flies Virgin Atlantic Upper Class on the A330-300, at 7.2/10 — the same fare, a different generation of seat.
Forward-facing staggered business suite in a 1-2-1 layout with direct aisle access for every passenger and a fully flat bed of roughly 79 inches. Each suite has a closing privacy door and tall (~52 in) partitions for a genuinely enclosed space, plus a large 24-inch UHD screen and wireless charging. Same seat family as Korean Air's 787-10 Prestige Suite. Center pairs can convert into a couple-friendly double.

The widest brochure gap in the field belongs to Alaska Airlines: a best seat of 9.1/10 against a typical seat of 6.4/10. Booking them is a lottery, and the ticket price does not tell you which draw you got.
The most consistent carrier is Thai Airways, whose typical seat scores within -0.0 of its best. On a fleet like that, the brand name actually means something.
Scores come from measured seat metrics — width, bed length, recline, direct aisle access, privacy, and how much fuselage width each seat gets — and are deterministic: change a measurement, the score changes with it. Nothing here is a reviewer's impression. Full methodology.
Typical-seat figures weight each cabin by the equipment shares the flight data shows on the routes we track. Carriers with few tracked routes have a thinner basis for that number, which is why the route count is shown next to it. And a carrier's rank reflects only the cabins we have measured — where we haven't scored a fleet in full, its best seat may be better than shown and its typical seat is measured over less of the network.
